Positive Behaviour Support works best when it fits everyday routines

A behaviour support plan should not sit in a drawer. It should make daily life safer, calmer and easier to understand for the participant and the people around them.

Start with the reason behind behaviour

Behaviour often communicates something important: pain, confusion, overload, unmet needs, difficulty with change or difficulty being understood.

A practical plan looks beyond the behaviour itself and asks what is happening before, during and after the behaviour.

Make strategies realistic

Families and support workers need strategies that fit the real environment. If a strategy only works in a clinic room, it may not help much at home, school or in the community.

Useful plans include clear language, examples, proactive supports, response steps and ways to track whether the plan is helping.

Review as life changes

New routines, medication changes, health issues, staffing changes or school/work transitions can all affect behaviour.

Reviews help the team adjust support before small issues become bigger risks.
